Chongqing Accelerates 10G Optical Network Pilot to Empower Digital Economy Development
On July 28, it was learned from the Chongqing Communications Administration that Chongqing plans to accelerate the large-scale application of "dual gigabit" networks and pilot 10G optical networks, further empowering the city's digital economy growth. Recently, the Chongqing Communications Administration, in collaboration with the Chongqing Economic and Information Commission, convened a working conference to advance the large-scale deployment of "dual gigabit" networks and the 10G optical network pilot program in 2025.
The "dual gigabit" network - comprising 5G and gigabit optical fiber - serves as a critical component of new infrastructure and a foundational pillar for digital economic growth and societal transformation.
In recent years, Chongqing has vigorously promoted the coordinated development of "dual gigabit" networks, intensifying efforts to establish itself as a "Gigabit City" through enhanced signal coverage, sensing capabilities, service reliability, and network performance. Chongqing now boasts over 36 5G base stations per 10,000 residents. The municipality has achieved complete 5G network coverage across urban areas, key tourist attractions, high-speed rail systems, subway networks, and all administrative villages, while maintaining 100% "dual gigabit" network penetration in industrial parks.
The local information and communications industry has proactively leveraged next-generation technologies like "dual gigabit" networks to empower diverse economic sectors, injecting robust momentum into Chongqing's digital economy. Currently, 5G applications have been deployed across more than 30 industries including logistics, agriculture, commerce, construction, finance, and manufacturing.
The 10G optical network represents the evolutionary next step in broadband development and constitutes a crucial component of new-era digital infrastructure. Delivering ten times the bandwidth of conventional gigabit networks, ultra-low latency of 0.1 milliseconds, and exceptional 99.99% reliability, this cutting-edge technology serves as an "information expressway" for industrial internet, artificial intelligence (AI), and big data applications. The development of 10G optical networks plays a pivotal role in enhancing user experience, fostering new forms of digital consumption, advancing next-generation industrialization, and accelerating the digital transformation of the economics.
To orderly promote the pilot application of pilot 10G optical networks, in April 2025, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People's Republic of China (MIIT) launched a national pilot program for 10G optical network applications, selecting 168 sites across 86 cities, including residential communities, factories, and industrial parks. Chongqing secured five pilot projects spanning these three key scenarios.
Next, Chongqing will consolidate its "dual gigabit" (5G + gigabit fiber) infrastructure to amplify the digital economy's growth, accelerating industrial applications and technological empowerment. The city plans to expedite 10G optical network pilots, deploying 10G optical network technology across diverse settings to strengthen digital foundations and unlock new economic potential. A "use-driven construction" approach will guide the transition from "dual gigabit" to "dual 10G" networks - integrating 5G-Advanced (5G-A) and 10G optical network technologies - to establish a citywide framework with gigabit coverage as the baseline and 10G pilots in strategic zones.
