Successful Ignition! Chongqing Power Plant Environmental Relocation Project Enters Commissioning Phase for First Unit with Total Investment of RMB4.8 Billion, the Project Will Become a Key Power Pillar for Chongqing's Metropolitan Area Upon Completion

"Ignition!" At 23:38 on November 15, following the command, the first unit of the Chongqing Power Plant Environmental Relocation Project, situated in Wansheng Economic and Technological Development Zone, achieved a successful ignition on its first attempt, marking its entry into the steam blowing commissioning phase. This milestone has laid a solid foundation for the full-scale startup and trial operation of the first unit. Once operational, the unit will significantly bolster Chongqing's power supply during the upcoming winter peak demand period.
It is learned that the Chongqing Power Plant Environmental Relocation Project involves a total planned investment of RMB4.8 billion, with the main plant covering over 400 mu (approximately 26.67 hectares). It comprises two highly efficient ultra-supercritical coal-fired wet cooling generating units, each with a capacity of 660,000 kilowatts.
The project's installed capacity accounts for approximately 9.5% of Chongqing's total coal-fired power capacity. Upon full completion, its annual electricity generation is expected to reach 6.3 billion kilowatt-hours, positioning it as a critical power pillar for Chongqing's metropolitan area. Key technical and economic indicators - such as power supply standard coal consumption, auxiliary power consumption rate, and pollutant emissions - rank among the most advanced domestically for units in the 600,000-kilowatt class.
How will the newly added electricity be connected to the city's power grid? Chongqing has long had preparations in place. On November 4, the 500kV outgoing transmission project supporting the Chongqing Power Plant Environmental Relocation Project was completed. This infrastructure includes a substation spanning 7.27 hectares, approximately 71 kilometers of transmission lines, and 141 transmission towers, enabling the connection of the Chongqing Power Plant Environmental Relocation Project's two generating units to Chongqing's main power grid.
Originally established in 1952 and commissioned in 1954, Chongqing Power Plant was initially located in Huangjueping, Jiulongpo District, with a maximum installed capacity of 800,000 kilowatts. It was the first automated thermal power plant in Southwestern China. Between 2014 and 2015, in response to environmental protection needs, Chongqing Power Plant was relocated to Wansheng Economic and Technological Development Zone.
While advancing Chongqing Power Plant Environmental Relocation Project, Chongqing is also accelerating efforts to enhance its overall power supply capacity. Reporters from Chongqing Daily learned from the Chongqing Development and Reform Commission and the Chongqing Municipal Energy Bureau that over the next three years, the city plans to invest more than RMB130 billion in new power infrastructure. Key projects include: 2,000 megawatts of coal-fired power, 5,000 megawatts of natural gas-fired power, 1,200 megawatts of pumped-storage hydropower, and a large number of new energy local power sources. Meanwhile, it will push for the on-schedule completion and commissioning of external power projects supplying Chongqing, including the "Xinjiang Electricity Transmission to Chongqing" project and the Sichuan-Chongqing 1000kV UHV AC project. By 2025, Chongqing aims to add more than 10,000 megawatts of installed capacity and over 12,000 megawatts of external power transmission capability, comprehensively alleviating current supply constraints.
